I about SSSSH today on Good Morning America and I was touched by what you told us regarding Hal Reichle. He must have been a great and generous man. No doubt he is missed greatly by so many. I am a pastor in the Church of the Nazarene and I pulled a "Rechle" Tuesday of this week when I took a basket of food over to a family of four who were having a hard time. The husband has been out of work, but will be stating to work this coming Monday. May we all follow in the footsteps of Hal Reichle, if so, this world will be a far better place in which to live.

November 27, 2003

I just watched the story this morning on Good Morning America about SSSSH. I can't wait to get started pulling a Reichle! What a way to get into the Christmas spirit!

I bought flowers and teddy bears for every person on 3 floors of the local hospital.

My family saw the story on SSSSH on Good Morning America on Thanksgiving morning. I have done some things like this in the past, and remember how much fun it was. On the way home from Gramma and Grampa's, my daughter and I went through a toll booth. I bought a roll on tokens, and asked the attendant to use the roll to pay for the tolls of the people behind me. AT first, she thought I meant just the one car directly behind, and smiled...."How nice of you!". When I clarified that I wanted to use leave the whole roll of tokens to cover as many cars as it could, she grinned and chuckled. Unfortunately, we had yet to print out the cards explaining why we did this, so we'll just have to consider this a practice run, and do it again on the next trip! Thanks for reminding me of how much fun this kind of thing is!

A bunch of us attend a seminar at the Church Center for the United Nations every October. We usually get weekly transit passes, but are only in New York for three days. Sooooo...what do you do with four extra days? This year, we found someone on the subway who just happened to work in the student services office of a New York-area college or university (can't remember which). She was going to give them out so some of the students could save a few bucks (and we all know that sometimes every penny counts). By the way, Roger, nice to see you on "GMA" this AM!

On Monday (three days before thanksgiving I went to the grocery to pick up some last minute items,, seeing a women there with the 3 children in tow I heard each one ask again and again for items they wanted and heard Mommy say NO we CANT afford that,, they were asking for cookies crackers and macaroni and cheese... I looked a bit closer and saw though they were clean the clothing was worn and did not fit well... I went to the store manager, and bought 250.00 worth of store gift certificates and handed themn to the manager along with a card from your group, and showed him who to give them to.. He smiled like a child and added another 50 to my gift and handed the lady the card,, as she was checking out,, she cried,, and told the kids to go get the cookies they wanted, cause now she can pay the electric and phone AND feed the kids..

Thanksgiving was a lot happier at my home this year,, she made me feel better just knowing she was able to feed and keep her little ones warm..

Thanks Hal... you are an insperation..

I was excited to see the story about the SSSSH on TV on Thanksgiving. My colleague and I teach emotionally impaired children at Hickory Woods School. This fall we began a secret service project in our school. Each week we pass out a bag of little candies, a smile poster to be hung outside the classroom and a letter explaining that the chosen class should spread their smiles. I cannot believe how caught up in this our students have become. They call themselves the Secret Smile Agents - and have taken an "oath" not to reveal that they are doing the good deed. When one class asked us if we did it, the kids did not reveal themselves. The class asked how they should thank the giver of the candy - we told them they'd just have to smile at everyone because they won't know who did it. We wanted our emotionally impaired children to really feel how great it is to do a good deed without recognition - we are thrilled at how this is affecting our school. Your story will give our students a lot more to think about, and a real connection for their own project. I'm sure they would love to hear from some of you!

About a week ago I over heard a conversation while dropping off a package at a veterinarians office. A single woman, who had just moved to our state, had found a sick dog. She had come to the veterinarian to get help for the dog and try to find its owner. I gave the receptionist $20.00 and told her to put it on this woman’s bill. No one at the veterinarian’s office knew me. As I left I heard someone say, "Who was that woman"?

i just wanted to say that i was touched this morning by the ssssh group. i am going to do some acts of kindness as well. hal must have been one hell of a good man.

******************************

November 27, 2003

Gosh, I have unknowingly been a member of SSSSH for quite awhile and just didn't know it. I started by "dropping" a quarter near the library door entrance and watched how excited people (mostly children) would get when they found it.

About a month ago I was meeting my husband for dinner and arrived at the restaurant early. I was seated at a table. Next to me were two soldiers trying to decide what they were going to order with their limited funds. They were leaving for Iraq the following day. I looked as if I was going to the restroom, found our waiter and gave him $20.00 toward the soldier’s bill and told him not to say a word. My husband arrived and we placed our ordered. Shortly after our waiter informed the soldiers that someone in the restaurant had given them a $20.00 gift toward their dinner and that the restaurant had bought them both desert and coffee. It was the gift that kept on giving!!!

MAY MR. REICHLE'S KINDNESS AND COMPASSI0N, LIVE ON. HIS WONDERFUL PHILOSOPHY IS A GREAT LEGACY TO MANKIND.I CERTAINLY WILL TRY TO FOLLOW HIS EXAMPLE...AND IT IS SO SIMPLE...LITTLE THINGS SOMETIMES MEAN A LOT. AND EVERYTIME WE SMILE TO A STRANGER ON THE STREET WE SERVE OUR GOD, ENRICH THE OTHER PERSON'S LIFE AND ALSO OUR OWN.

November 27, 2003

I'm glad I was watching Good Morning America this morning to catch your story. I have often performed acts like this before. I will continue to do so now with Hal in mind and heart! Way to go Hiram College and all those involved. Thanks for sharing the Hal Reichle story!

I am inspired. Thanks for giving me an outlet to do random acts of kindness. This is "Pay It Forward" in action.

November 27, 2003

I saw the brief spot on ABC's Good Morning America and was very impressed with what you are doing. For several years I have tried to do small acts of kindness for others. I will continue to do them in the future but now in honor of Hal! He must have been a wonderful person

I am a teacher who, just a few minutes ago, saw the piece on SSSSH! on ABC's Good Morning America show, this Thanksgiving morning. I've copied information from this website and intend to share it with my 6th graders. I anticipate that they will want to become involved in this effort. However, I need to know the correct pronunciation for "Reichle". Is it RY KIL or RY SHUL? Thanks for your efforts.

******************************

November 27, 2003

After hearing about Hal Reichle on Good Morning America this morning, I decided to I wanted to participate. I'm not sure of my anonymous deed yet, but I am going to spread the word over the Thanksgiving Holiday. I will give a Hal Reichie card to each member of my family at Thanksgiving dinner and challenge them to perform an anonymous good deed. Also, I have a tribute speech in college due on Monday and while I already have my 5 minute speech chosen, I will give a 1 minute tribute speech about Hal and hand out a card to challenge each student. I also have a power point presentation due on Monday, which I will use SSSSH as my topic, and again challenge each student in that class to perform a random act of kindness.

Happy to help in Ellensburg, Washington.

November 27, 2003

Dear Mr. Cram, Hearing about SSSSH on TV this beautiful Thanksgiving morning completely pulled me out of a slight depression I was feeling. I don't have a lot of money but I do have a lot of free time and I know many very kind people. Today I am going to print out information about SSSSH, along with some sheets of the cards, and I will anonimously (sp?) give them to as many of my friends as I can so that they can uplift the lives of others as they go about their days. I always try to be kind and it amazes me that I always feel even more uplifted than the person I have done a good-deed for. Thanks for making my day.

Heard about SSSSH on Good Morning America on Thanksgiving morning and couldn't wait to print out some cards and share them with my family later. We are so blessed, and I knew they would be delighted to learn of this concrete way to express their "attitude of gratitude." Thanks for sharing Hal's story.

I do a good deed a week or more if I can....I am a senior citizen and

have NO vehicle, so take the bus...I have paid for people ride when they

fumble for/or do NOT have the money...I have given up my day pass as I was thru with it. I give little gifts at different times just "because." To those that most peole allow to fall thru the cracks." I take out and fold clothes in the apt. dryer (32 unit) when I know it is a working mother w/small children I pick up newspapers w/I know people have gone for awhile to keep safe from unsavory "looky-loos." Return w/ they get home. Have paid for "homeless" lunches in fast-food places and definately keep anonymous. Many more I can't think of as usually has to be on spur of the moment and suit the situation. You have a GREAT idea and should be spread, so many people so "self-encompasses."

He who is so wrapped up in self, make very small package...(disease of the present society?) sooooo sad...Thank you...(sometimes I have NOT had money to even take the bus, but no-one does me a good deed) That has NEVER stopped me from doing. I like the "warm fuzzy feeling opposed to the cold pricklys"

I want you to know I was very moved by the story of Hal I saw on Good Morning America. I came immediately to this website and added it to my favorites, and have forwarded this information to my address book. You see, I've been doing silly things like this myself for many years, like going down the street and putting money in every expired parking meter to keep people from getting a ticket or giving someone shopping bags I had to pay for because they needed them. Our family has often paid the toll for the car behind us in line. I like the idea of this "habit" spreading across the nation. Thank you for sharing this gift. I wish you continued good works. I plan to spread the word. God Bless You all.

November 27, 2003

I knew Hal when he was a child. His father Wayne and my father had known each other for many years. Hal and his family used to visit us in Mass. where my younger brother and Hal, who was called Harold in those days, did their best to beat each other up!

If they did not visit us in Mass. we would travel to Ohio to see them.

My sister saw the story on television this morning (Thanksgiving). Unfortunately, as is often the case, we all lost touch as we grew up. But we were all very sad to hear of Hal's death during the Gulf War.

We were not aware of this society, but we were gratified to see that other people remember Hal as fondly as we do.

******************************

November 27, 2003

payed for the meal of the family in the drive-thru line. The funny thing is, it was a car full of girl scouts, the total was $46.00! But, it was a random act of kindness, so I followed through with it.

November 27, 2003

"When you have done it unto the least of these, ye have done it unto me." Service is a God-like gift that is free from the heart. The warm, cozy inner feeling of doing good deeds lasts forever. Being annon is the best part of doing good deeds. It feels better without handing a card out. The Good Samaritan story had the same impact. Taking the time when time is inconvient to help another fellow being is what God would want us to do. Ever Onward!!

November 27, 2003

I just saw this story on Good Morning America and felt compelled to write. I raised three children as a single parent, and I can proudly say that they long ago learned the lesson that you share with others through this program. I would be honored to continue engaging in random acts of anonymous kindness in the name of Hal Reichle. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

To all the members of SSSSH:

Your acts of kindness are a wonderful tribute. I wish I could have met Hal. Your acts of kindness remind me of the move I just recently watch - PAY IT FORWARD. I thought the moving was fantastic and was very glad to hear about SSSSH two weeks later. I wish everyone could become like Hal. What a better place this world would be!!!! I have always tried to live by the golden rule: DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE OTHERS DO UNTO YOU or IT IS BETTER TO GIVE THAT RECEIVE.

Today is Thanksgiving and I find it very appropriate that I discovered SSSSH today. Now I will add this to my list of things to be thankful for.

I would like to say thank you to all the people that have pulled a Hal. Thank you to all the people that have helped to establish SSSSH and keep Hal's memory alive. And last but not least THANK YOU TO HAL FOR HAVING THE INSIGHT TO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE. God Bless Everyone!

November 27, 2003

I was seated at a u-shaped counter in a New York City hotel with about 15 other people, trying to get served. The waitress seemed slow and was getting harassed by most of the impatient customers. I was in a hurry and about to add my 'get with it' comment but suddenly thought better of it and said 'You seem to be having a difficult time today.'

The waitress said, 'Oh, mister, I shouldn't be here today. My baby boy is having an operation and I should be at the hospital, but I can't afford not to work.' There was dead silence at the counter for about 20 seconds. The man to my left pulled a $20 out of his pocket, handed it to me and said, 'Add to it and pass it on." I did. Everyone did. Tens, twenties, even a fifty. On the far side of the counter, the last man, a big, muscular guy about 6'3 pushed the money to the waitress and hollered, 'Chef, get out here.' When the chef appeared, the big

guy said, 'This lady is going to the hospital to be with her boy. You got a problem with that?' Chef said 'no, no sir'. The waitress, through tears of delight, said 'Thank you all', took off her apron and ran out the door. I was amazed. All I said was, 'You seem to be having a difficult time today.'

Saw the Good Morning America feature about your group and was very INSPIRED..what a WONDERFUL idea...and how nice to hear news about GOOD people secretly doing GOOD things for others!

My grandfather was a grocery store clerk back in the 1930's and he used to secretly drop off bags of groceries to needy people in town ..I remember him telling me that it had to be done anonymously...he always made sure no one saw who delivered.

THANK YOU FOR THE INSPIRATION AND MOTIVATION!! I'm off to "PULL A REICHLE"

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I was moved to tears this morning watching you on Good Morning America. I rarely have the luxury of sitting to watch the news because of my job. I'm a 4th grade teacher in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

I've printed as much as I could from your web site and plan on introducing this important lesson to my students on Monday.

I do believe in angels and this is proof. Thank you for your message of generosity and selflessness. I can't wait to use my cards.

I had tears running down my face when I heard your interview on Good Morning America this morning -- Thanksgiving Day. It is a wonderful thing you all are doing -- particularly to honor Hal and his memory. I've have done things like this in the past -- and you do get a indescribable feeling after you do this. You make such an impact on others and they never forget what had happened to them. I plan on getting my 3 daughters involved in doing things like this for others. Thank you for the reminder that there is such a need for good things for others. We get so involved in ourselves and our busy lives we forget that there are others that need that small gesture that helps then through their day.

I recently heard of a young man who was paralyzed 17 years ago in a swimming accident. Despite the fact that he is now a paraplegic he insists on being as independent as his body will allow. He could live at home with his Mother, however he chooses to live on his own, needing 24 hour care. He has an old van that has been specially equipped for him, however it is in sad disrepair. I was trying to find a way to donate some funds to him without making him feel like it was "charity". I saw your wonderful organization described on Good Morning America and I knew I had found the path of giving. I will enclose a "Reichle Card" with my donation and in that way I will honor our fallen soldier as well as make it possible for the young man to buy a new van. Thank you for your commitment to filling the world with joy. I'm delighted to become a member of SSSSH!

A rather grumpy but good-hearted older woman told of how she'd love to once again see the movie she and her husband saw on their first date in 1956 (I think). It was quite difficult and expensive to locate "The High and the Mighty" with John Wayne, but I did, and left it for her anonymously. I didn't know about SSSSH at the time or I would have left a card with the tape. I hope they enjoyed watching it as much as I enjoyed giving it.

Bet you're going to be inundated with emails this morning after your inspiring story that I just saw on "Good Morning America" I then rushed to my computer to find you. It certainly opens up a world of creative thinking. I'm ready and set to go and will pass this on as well. One of my dearest friends is a local news anchor person. Perhaps she can use this story in the future as it takes hold, hopefully, here in our area. There's so much bad news. It's time for a little positive! Thank you, and Hal!

November 27, 2003

It was about two months ago, my wife, myself, and two other couples were eating at a Chinese restaurant in Nashville, TN. The waitress told us that she would bring us our bill, but someone had already paid it. We couldn't believe it, because the bill had to be about $150 for the six of us, plus one child. We debated this all night. Some thought it was the waitress, while others of us tried to figure out who would have done it. You see, myself and one of the other men that night, are blind, so we really weren't certain what the motive was. We never hade been able to figure anything out, but I think your story on Good Morning America has just told me everything. I know we'll probably never know who committed that unexpected act of kindness, but on behalf of everyone there, I would simply like to say "Thank you."

******************************

November 27, 2003

We have a single mother with a young daughter (age 9) living across the street. For the past 2 years, I have been anonymously leaving gift bags on the front porch for the little girl, signed "Your Secret Pal". I don't spend a lot. I buy a lot of things at the Dollar Store--crayons, coloring books, school supplies, flash cards, books, puzzles. I try to buy educational items. Oh Yeah, I always put packages of decorative stickers in the bags. Kids love those.

They have indicated that they "think" it's me, but I don't admit to it. I usually put it on the porch when they are out or at night after dark. It is really fun.

November 27, 2003

i just want to say I saw your story on GMA and loved it. I have sat in our church at mass and wanted to place a plain envelope with some money in it on the pew in front of us when they went to communion with a note inside to take the family out to eat anonymously. I loved your story and it reminded me of the Volkswagen commercial in some ways. What goes around comes around. Thanks for all of your hard work. Please do not respond to this e-mail address but instead the one listed below at recovery link. Thanks again and have a great holiday season! Donna

I cannot be certain but after hearing the story on Thanksgiving Day on the news I feel confident that I was Reichled. In Dec of 95' I was home from college in Va and running errands around town in Mansfield, OH the day before a surgery I was having the following morning. I was going thru a drive thru of a fast food restaurant fretting about the next morning and scared to death. When I drove up to the window to pay I was told that the person in front of had paid for my meal and that He wanted me to have a good day. As I drove away from that window I began crying. My concerns for the next morning went to the wayside by the kindness of a thoughtful person I didn't even know. If the person that did this reads my letter - Thank You - You made a profound impact on a complete stranger!

November 27, 2003

i've been doing this for years. i never knew it had a name.

during the winter while doing driveways, i usually do the ones of anyone older than me (im 58) for free and keep on going. no need to ask anyone. it usually just pisses off the local kids who go around for money. occasionally, if they're on vacation, i'll stomp to the front door just to leave tracks as if they were home. more than once, i've neen stopped by the local cops to ask what i was doing. some even find me and bring a coffee in the squad car later on on the day. its contagious. sure hope the whole world catches it.

I saw your story on Good Morning America on Thanksgiving morning. It was too funny because without even knowing about Pulling A Reichle my daughter and I had pulled one off the night before.

We were at a grocery store buying last-minute items for Thanksgiving and we both noticed this elderly couple purchasing all bargain items, generic toilet paper, etc. when the rest of the store was walking around with baskets filled with all sorts of goodies for the upcoming holiday feast.

These two elderly people were the sweetest looking couple and you could tell they were totally counting pennies. When they got behind us in line and as I was paying with my debit card I leaned over and whispered to my daughter, I think I'll get an extra $20 and hand it to the cashier to go towards their groceries. My daughter smiled. I then leaned over to the clerk who was just staring at me in amazement. I asked him to take the $20 and put it towards their grocery bill and if there was anything left to just give them the change. He just stood there shaking his head.

My daughter and I left the store quickly and got in our car and drove around to the front of the store to peek inside. I had a moment of wondering if the cashier would keep the money and not do what I asked, but as soon as I saw this lovely elderly couple with their basket of groceries I knew he'd used the $20. They were looking into their bags and rechecking what they bought because they probably couldn't figure out why their bill was so low.

It felt so great to be able to do this. And then to see your story the next day -- well, I've already printed the little cards off your website. My daughter will take some and I'll take some and we will do what we can in our corner of the world.

Thank you for such an inspiring Thanksgiving story.

I saw your story on Thanksgiving morning on ABC news, and was so moved. I have always felt that the true joy of giving is a gift from the heart, with no expectation of something in return...or to give of ones self, and not tell or "brag" to another. I have done this for years, in small, yet meaningful ways, I will, and have spread the word of Hal's organization to many, as we speak. I am a Registered Nurse in St. Louis, MO. Thank you for this wonderful story today!!! You have touched my heart!

I just learned of Hal this morning (thanksgiving 2003) I watched a segment on the Good Morning America show when the anchor gave the e-mail address I was running franticly to find a pen but couldn't until it was too late and all I could remember was Hal... Hiram... and what I thought was SSSSH. I went directly to the computer and started searching and for the life of me couldn't. Later that day I went to my parents and before going to bed I tried again. My dad suggested looking for "random acts of kindness" and amazingly enough I found it. I was desperate for at least one of the cards so I could make copies. I have so many good ideas going through my head of what I can do for so many people I just can't wait to get started. Thank you Hal and SSSSH this story has really touch my soul and let me know that even if I am not rich and cannot afford to buy everyone everything they want or need... I CAN do something! Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Dear SSSSH,

I am was pleasantly surprised by your story on Good Morning America Thanksgiving Day. I always perform "good deeds" - giving my neighbors a ride to work on the days that I drive, getting coffee and donuts for my co-workers every morning, giving change for the meter to a stranger and telling him to pass it on when he asked how can he pay it back. Thank you for your incredible legacy, Hal!!! Keep up the good work!!!

We saw you on TV on Thanksgiving Day and think you have a wonderful idea. I was in the USMC in the 1950's and now that I am retired, I try to do a deed of kindness everyday as my wife and I travel. We are amazed at how the opportunities arrive and how you can encourage someone. Many times we do not know the person, once we stopped to help at an accident it was a bad one, we talked to the man but his girlfriend was out of it. Years later we learned who they were and they are now married and live in Pa. we were at the accident in Indiana where the girl lived at the time. Now they send notes calling us their Guardian Angels and yet we have never met the girl. God brings folks into our lives everyday that need help or encouraged, and we are glad you brought it to the attention of so many on Thanksgiving for HAL.

Keep up the Good Work, the world needs more folks like Hal, it would be a much better place.

Personally, I have been a clandestine giver for many years. I really enjoyed hearing about SSSSH on the morning news. Keep up the good work!

What a treat to see you guys on the news! We need some positive news - wow, this one is right up my alley:-) I've seen bumper stickers 'Commit Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless beauty' and there was an article in the paper in the San Francisco Bay Area about folks paying for the toll bridge, etc. It's catchy. Thanks.

What a wonderful idea!!! As an elementary school counselor I try to instill in my students these very values. Give, but expect nothing in return. Wouldn't our world be amazing if more people would count their blessings and perform random acts of kindness. God Bless You All!!! What you are doing will truly make a difference in our world. I will try hard to do my part!

I saw the report on your group on Good Morning America. You should be applauded for your efforts. I would be interested in learning more about SSSSH and getting involved here in Edina, Minnesota.

I just e-mailed family and friends Hals site. I told them since I have been out of work for so long I am giving them the gift of giving for Christmas. This is such a wonderful thing and I hope more people join. God bless Hal.

I wanted to say your appearance on GMA was quite enlightening. You brought tears to my eyes. What I have considered community service will now be "Pulling a Reichle". May you all be blessed and I am sure Hal is honored to have you as his friends.

My daughter is a Hiram Graduate. She knew Hal. She informed us about SSSSH. We purchased a new electric range for a family of 5 who had no range. They were using a crock pot to cook. We had it delivered. This was done very anonymously. Keep up the outstanding great work and worthwhile tradition.
